- The opening sentence where he immediately starts off by stating all of the discourse communites he is apart of and how every single one of them has a lot of tension in them. Creates for an immediate opening of a sense of tension. "I'm a 34-year old NBA center. I'm black. And I'm gay."
- Jason Collins is the only one raising his hand saying he is different. He is isolating himself through discourse and making even more tension between society and himself.
- When he said "some of us know and accept our sexuality right away and some need more time to cook. I should know-I baked for 33 years." This could make someone who is opposed to gays feel uncomfortable and expresses who he is, and tries to cut the tension and gets right to the point of who he is to society. However this in fact just creates more tension between him and society.
Also, this article is a piece of creative nonfiction because it is telling a true story told well through the use of a first-person point of view with insight from that specific person. Because the person is telling a first hand account, will leave out the unimportant details, and might even add some details to make it more interesting. It is still a true story however, because it zooms in on a specific point in time and has more details, it is more creative. It shows how you can be creative with telling a story and getting an overall message across.
3 Moments of tension within my own discourse communities
- Whenever I don't know someone but they seem to know me, creates tension because I seemed more important to them than they do to me.
- When introducing someone to other people which you have to do a lot as a first year college student, it causes for tension because although I like both of the people, I never know how they will respond and react to each other.
- And something that happens all the time in discussions, trying to come to an agreement on something, but realizing that you both just have different opinions and won't come to an agreement. This can be hard to overcome the tension when the other person is stubborn and keeps arguing and you just want the tension to be over.
